I am an African

I am an African

I am an African,
Proud of who I am,
My veins are filled with the rapids of the Limpopo,
And my heart beats with the sand atop the Kilimanjaro,
I am a son of the soil,
The beat of our drums makes my blood boil,
My feet dance and stamp the earth,
In the land of my birth.

I am an African,
Proud to say it again,
I am a son to a father,
A brother to a sister,
A father to a daughter,
And a prince in the eyes of my mother,
I am a friend to many,
From Durban to beyond Guinea.

I am an African,
An African man,
I becry the battles in Libya,
And the suffering in the Land of Somalia,
I celebrate the successes in Pretoria,
For we are all sons and daughters of Africa,
I moan at the rot in Harare,
And pray that things set themselves right one day.

I am an African,
True to who I am,
My heart beats with the rhythm of millions,
And my blood flows with that of those millions,
The birds in trees sing my song,
In the hills, valleys and rivers where I belong,
Ask me once more who I am,
I will again say, I am an African.
