A dream betrayed

Many battles were fought on home soil,
In a war with great suffering and much toil,
The vision was in the beginning so true,
Yet now it seems we fought for very few,
Sons and daughters left their mothers and fathers,
Mothers and fathers left their sons and daughters,
For a cause that they all believed in,
That tomorrow they would be free.

They promised us land to plant seed
And a life and country free of greed,
They promised us homes to rest our feet,
And grand shelters to hide under in the heat,
They promised us a life that we had only seen,
That we would go to many exotic places we had never been,
Now all these promises are still a mystery,
All the intentions that we fought with are history.

What good is valor without victory at the end?
What use is the pain of war that we can never mend?
What use is a dream if it can be betrayed?
What use is a future that leaves a whole nation dismayed?
We sacrificed whole lives for very few,
Now we know what it is we should and shouldn’t do,
To reclaim a dream for the dismayed,
A dream that has been betrayed.
