Hard won victory

The light was blinding,
Brightly shining,
I was too accustomed to darkness,
So this feeling became priceless,
I knew I would never feel it again,
Like a quick reprieve from pain,
Like a man condemned given another life,
Free of strife.

I looked at what I had become,
Leagues different from when I’d begun,
The pains and sorrows indeed had a purpose,
And I’d forgotten the tears and sorrows.
It was all worth it,
Especially when you overcome defeat,
I stood and savoured in my victory,
A hard won victory.
