Turning Tide

My brother in arms fought by my side,
A presence fresh in my mind,
We fought in trenches and won a lost a war,
And we did no more than those before.

The time has come to lay down the arms,
Time for a different man now dawns,
The battles fought have delivered their fruit,
Welcome the gentleman, goodbye to the brute.

The tide has turned and now is in our favour,
A reward for our unwavering valour,
Or perhaps we needed hope to stay alive,
Knowing today will arrive.

The joy in our hearts is one we never knew,
The things we see and now can do,
Our day has come with you still by my side,
Our hats come off to salute the turning tide.
